What Are the Signs of a Broken Ankle?

A broken ankle or ankle fracture refers to a break or a hairline crack in any of the bones that make up the ankle. While rarely life-threatening, ankle fractures can be extremely painful. If you have fractured your ankle you may experience pain, swelling, bruising, deformity, numbness or tingling, limited ankle mobility, and an inability to bear weight on the affected ankle. In the case of an open fracture, you may see the broken bone poking through the skin. Ankle fractures require prompt medical attention. They are usually diagnosed through physical examination and imaging studies like X-rays. If you are suffering from the symptoms of a broken ankle, please seek the care of a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Broken ankles need immediate treatment. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Specialists, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  •  Swelling around the area
  •  Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.

Foot conditions in older adults are quite common. Poor foot health increases an elderly person’s risk of falling and can negatively affect their quality of life. The foot conditions that affect senior citizens can be caused by degradations in foot and ankle skin and structure, poor circulation, systemic disorders, and more. Regular foot care is very important for the elderly person, and if they are unable to properly attend to their own feet, a caretaker or loved one should do it. Feet should be kept clean and checked regularly to spot any changes. An older person should never be barefoot, their toenails should be trimmed regularly, and their socks should keep moisture away from their skin and not be too tight around the ankles. Feet should be measured every time they purchase shoes to ensure proper fit and account for feet spreading and changing with age. Shoes should offer support in the heel and arch and high heels should be avoided. Additionally, getting their feet examined by a podiatrist would be beneficial to address any foot pain they may be experiencing, and to also be fitted with custom orthotics to help correct alignment and stride issues to improve stability and comfort.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Specialists, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Stuart and Jupiter, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Has My Child Broken a Toe?

A broken toe is a common injury children can incur that parents have to properly address. It can happen as a result of stubbing the toe into a piece of furniture, or from dropping a heavy object on the toe. If the break is severe, the toe may become dislocated. This is noticeable as the bone protrudes from the toe. Many parents will take their child for an X-ray, and this is helpful in determining if a fracture has occurred. An effective treatment method for mildly broken toes can consist of buddy taping. This is accomplished by taping the affected toe to the toe next to it. This is generally effective in providing the support that is needed as the healing process occurs. Common symptoms of a broken toe can include immediate bruising, and it is often difficult to walk. If your child has broken a toe, it is strongly suggested that you seek the advice of a podiatrist who can make a proper diagnosis and offer effective treatment methods.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Specialists, PA. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

The Four Types of Athlete's Foot

Athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis, is a fungal infection of the skin fn the feet. There are four main types of athlete’s foot, all of which have a different clinical presentation. Chronic hyperkeratotic tinea pedis causes scaling and thickening of the skin on the soles of the feet. Chronic intertriginous tinea pedis causes scaling, redness, and peeling of the skin between and under the toes. Acute ulcerative tinea pedis is characterized by wet, swollen, pruney skin lesions with scaly borders between the toes. This type of athlete’s foot is more likely to get a secondary bacterial infection. Vesiculobullous tinea pedis is characterized by blisters forming on the soles of the feet. If you suspect that you have athlete’s foot, see a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Specialists, PA.  Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Solutions to Combat Athlete’s Foot

  • Hydrate your feet by using lotion

  • Examine your feet and visit your doctor if any suspicious blisters or cuts develop

Athlete’s foot can cause many irritating symptoms such as dry and flaking skin, itching, and redness. Some more severe symptoms can include bleeding and cracked skin, intense itching and burning, and even pain when walking. In the worst cases, Athlete’s foot can cause blistering as well. Arthritis and the Big Toe

Osteoarthritis, the type of arthritis that is associated with aging, can affect any joints in the body, including the big toe joint. As we age, the cartilage that lines joints breaks down due to wear and tear, causing symptoms such as swelling, pain, and stiffness in the affected joints. Osteoarthritis in the big toe can cause tenderness, achiness, and joint pain in the toe in its initial stages. As the arthritis progresses, you may also begin to feel burning or nerve pain in the toe. The symptoms are typically present at rest, and particularly after long periods of sitting or inactivity. Arthritis can also lead to excess bone growth in the big toe, causing the joint to fuse and become immobile. If you have symptoms of arthritis in your toes, please see a podiatrist for treatment.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Advanced Foot & Ankle Specialists, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Stuart and Jupiter, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.
